Nyabihu demonstration center  for  the deaf

Fundraising has brought us this wonderful new Residential School for our 130 children!  Every penny counts!

THE  FUTURE

PictureOne of the old classrooms - it's dark and cramped!
Friends in England and America, have fundraised over the last four years and this is the result. Friends in Rwanda have donated land and worked ceaselessly to promote the school in the Local and National arena.
Thanks go to friends in England, who have collected through raffles, Charity events, and talks on Rwanda. Especial thanks go to Chance for Childhood who sought fundaisers for the main costs of the construction.  And to Team Abana! www.ey.com/gl/en/alumni/ey-team-abana-teaming-for-a-purpose
What an amazing feet they have achieved for us. Check this out!  Inspired?   chanceforchildhood.org/event/race-across-america/

Of course, we still need a few items!
Furnishing this new resource has it's challenges as well as the continual running costs of any        Centre like ours. New desks, text books, play materials, beds, and a basketball court are just        some of the items on our 'wish list'!

If you would like to donate, please contact us.  Do not think that a small amount will not make        any difference. The small amounts add up!

Donations to the Centre can be made through Chance for Childhood.  Ask for the donation to be directed to their Rwanda Deaf School project. chanceforchildhood.org

Starting THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR                                                                     EVERY LITTLE HELPS

Most of our children come from extremely poor families who can not afford to pay any school fees so they really are in need in every aspect of their lives. They face social Discrimination (educational, medical care, opportunities, social ....) There is still a prevalent mindset and myth here, that a deaf person is useless. From a recent assessment, we also found around 50 deaf adults aged between 18 and 40 years old.  We are not able to offer these people any formal education, but  access to vocational training would enable them to learn a trade and improve their standard of living as well as their place in the society.  We are exploring the possibility of helping them to set up a cooperative. But there is a long way to go before we can do that as we need financial supprt as well as a clear plan of which vocations to develop, and where this is to be done.

Sponsor a Teacher

Are you an artist?  Do you think the Arts should be promoted in our schools?  Especially for children who find literacy challenging.  We do.
Damascene is a very skilled craftsman and artist.  He used to teach the older children to a very high standard, and some of their work was amazing. Unfortunately, we no longer have the funding to employ him.  We hope that we will soon find a donor who cares about the Arts who would like to support his reappointment.

This boy is 6 years old. He needs to be at school. When at home he is hidden by his parents who are extremely poor, ashamed that they have a disabled child and unable to cover his school fees at a Deaf Center.

This local man is Deaf and even though he is an adult he has no skills or training that can help him improve his quality of life. He was coming to the Centre daily and learning some woodcarpenty skills from Damascene. Although Damascene is no longer teaching at the Centre, this man has improved his skill set and grown in confidence. We need Damascene back - he has made a difference not only to the children's future, our school environment, but also to deaf members in the wider community.

Changing life chances and providing opportunities. That is what we are about!
